Earth Week 2011
For 2011 we had a full week of activities, activities included…
- Expanding our compost (green) waste diversion to include bins in the bathrooms where paper towels will now be diverted from landfill.
- Painting eco-friendly messages on old and misprint t-shirts with local artist Ginny Parsons. Thanks to local eco-friendly shirt printers Astro Press for also donating misprint t-shirts.
- Encouraging waste-free lunches
- Planting three trees on the school grounds.
- Family evening painting old tees with eco-friendly messages and designs.
- Collecting spare change for otter research and conservation.
- Alameda Municipal Power sent out a special teacher edition of their newsletter ‘Flash’
- Wearing green for the Earth Day.
Earth Week 2010
For 2010 we had a full week of activities, centered on learning how to preserve water and protect our oceans. Activities included…
- Wearing blue for the Oceans day and wearing green for the Earth Day.
- An Ocean Debris table set up by fourth and fifth graders before and after school.
- Selling reusable grocery bags designed by Edison students: profits went to Save The Bay and Misson Blue
- Fifth grade and kindergarteners planting a tree on Earth Day.
- Students creating Earth Spirit Masks (with help from local artist Ginny Parsons)
- Garden Docents making earth pockets.
- Encouraging walking and rolling to school and walking school buses.
- Encouraging waste-free lunches
- Students sharing poems and speeches at our Earth Expressions show at the end of the week.
Earth Week 2009
For 2009 we combined Earth Day (April 22nd) and Arbor Day (April 24th) into Earth Week. Activities included…
- Students creating a beautiful Junk Mail Mural (with help from local artist Ginny Parsons)
- Encouraging parents to reduce their junk mail
- Raising enough to buy three trees to plant at school
- Raise enough to protect 22 acres of rain forest through Conservation International
- Encouraging walking and rolling to School
- Encouraging waste-free lunches
- Fantastic assembly from the Banana Slug Band
- Family night “Our Amazing Planet!” hosted by the Rebecca Stees of Art Yowza and the Dads’ Club
- Planting ceremony on Arbor Day – 3 trees planted in the courtyard.
